Looks Like Over-the-Top Weddings Are Getting Downsized Too
Today's article on Newday's homepage had a feature article on couples cutting expenses for weddings and being concerned about having enough guests to fill the room at the catering hall. Many guests are declining invites because its just too darn expensive to go. Have you ever been to a NY wedding? Even as a guest it will cost you several hundred dollars. Now I don't know about you but when my husband & I go a wedding we make sure we cover the cost of our plates at the reception and give something above that for the gift, otherwise the newlyweds end up with nothing when they pay for it themselves.
IMO, I think that these high priced weddings for average people shouldn't happen to begin with if they can't afford it, sure you wanna splurge a little but not these crazy fairytale $50k events. For what? Some great memories & a nice photo album? Plans should be in proportion to their lifestyle and if those couples actually SAVED the "extra" money, it'd go toward their life together for a home purchase then they wouldn't start off with a bunch of debt that they racked up on credit cards & loans. I must admit that we eloped but then I wasn't the type to want the fairytale fantasy but we've been to at least a dozen lavish yet modest ceremonies for our friends.
The wedding business is big money on Long Island and now that industry is surely going to feel the changes come next Spring. Everything is always planned a year or more in advance so things that are booked already are usually set. Things like entertainment companies, florists, caterers and photographers are seeing more couples comparative shopping and its only going to get tougher to compete.
I can only imagine what salons & makeup artists are experiencing. Wedding day hair & makeup are the bride's final pampering to look her best and skill is what you're going to pay for. Going with the lowest price for bridal beauty is risky although some stylists may offer more specials to keep their referrals coming in. The beauty industry needs a back up plan like ours to supplement with. Can't wait for a Motives salon presentation to go online that's corporate designed. I'd also like to see a database of active salons to showcase or refer to.
Time will tell. So here's the link to the article that set me off on my rant:
